Avoid traveling to these 70+ destinations where the risk of Covid-19 is very high
If you are planning to travel to Reunion for that big reunion or the Isle of Man to find men, you may want to reconsider your plans. These two locations are currently among 77 destinations listed as Level 4 or “Very High Covid-19” by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Level 4 is the highest of the four risk levels with regard to CDC Covid-19 Travel Recommendations. And the CDC confirms that you really shouldn’t go to such places.
The CDC’s four risk levels for Covid-19
Here are those four Covid-19 risk levels and what the CDC says about each:
- Level 4, Very High Covid-19: The CDC indicates on its website that it is necessary to “avoid traveling to these destinations. If you must travel to these destinations, make sure you are fully immunized before travel. These are countries that are colored brown on the accompanying CDC map. So basically don’t be brown when planning your trip.
- Level 3, Covid-19 High: For these destinations, the CDC tells you to “make sure you are fully immunized before you go to these destinations.” Unvaccinated travelers should avoid non-essential travel to these destinations. These are in red on the map.
- Level 2, Covid-19 Moderate: According to the CDC, “Make sure you are fully immunized before you go to these destinations. Unvaccinated travelers who are at increased risk of serious illness from Covid-19 should avoid non-essential travel to these destinations. These are in orange on the map and include 19 destinations such as Australia, Czech Republic, Egypt, Romania, Singapore and South Korea. Remember, orange you’re glad you weren’t redder.
- Level 1, Covid-19 Low: For these, the CDC says, “Make sure you are fully immunized before traveling to these destinations.” This is the lowest risk category, shown in yellow on the map, and a group of 30 destinations including Djibouti, Hong Kong, Hungary, Madagascar, New Zealand and Taiwan.
As you can see, the CDC recommends that you get the full vaccine, regardless of your destination. There is no Level 0.5, Covid-19 None. There is no such thing as a “Covid-19 is a hoax and that’s okay”.
So which destinations are currently on the highest level of the Covid-19 risk list? Well, let’s go region by region.
The South Pacific region has four destinations on the Tier 4 list: French Polynesia, Guam, Fiji and Papua New Guinea. By the end of July, Guam had reached its goal of fully immunizing at least 80% of its adult population. Guam was able to go from level 4 to level 3 in June. However, those days are Guam, or rather are not Guam now. The easing of other Covid-19-related precautions may have led to a further increase in August, prompting the CDC to reduce Guam to Level 4 last month.
Only one destination in East Asia falls into this level 4 category and that is Mongolia. The only downside is that North Korea, a potential vacation spot, actually falls into the “Level Unknown” category. So don’t embark on your spa and vineyard vacation in North Korea until much more is known about the spread and control of Covid-19 there.
South East Asia
Southeast Asia has four Tier 4 destinations: Thailand, Myanmar, Brunei, and Malaysia. The CDC last updated all of these travel recommendation lists on September 7, 2021 and, in the process, upgraded Brunei from Level 3 to Level 4. Note that Thailand is on the list but not Thigh. -Land, because some people may have pronounced Thailand in the past. If you want to get to Thigh-Land, you’ll need to find it on a map first, potentially near Butt-Land anywhere.
Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal and the Maldives are currently at level 4. Sri Lanka is a new addition, having moved up from level 3 on September 7th.
The CDC upgraded Azerbaijan to Level 4 at the end of August to join Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan.
Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Israel, Lebanon and Kuwait are on the level 4 list. In the past 28 days, Iran has registered the fourth total number of Covid-19 cases reported to the world with 899,528.
Eastern Europe and Western Asia
In this region, you would talk about Turkey as well as Montenegro, Kosovo and North Macedonia. If you think of Georgia, remember that it is on the list as well.
The European Union has seven countries at level 4: France, Estonia, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Portugal and Spain.
Switzerland is its own category here because it’s all neutral and everything. But the Covid-19 coronavirus clearly doesn’t care. The CDC placed Switzerland at the highest risk level at the end of August.
United Kingdom (United Kingdom)
The UK has not been OK on Covid-19 for most of the pandemic. According to the Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center, the UK recorded the third most reported Covid-19 case in the past 28 days (960,765) globally, behind only the US and India. It doesn’t exactly scream “come and visit!” Along with the UK in general, the CDC lists Jersey as a separate Tier 4 destination. It’s Jersey, the largest of the Channel Islands, not New Jersey, the home of The Situation from the show. reality show Jersey Shore.
The African continent has 13 destinations on the level 4 list, including three in North Africa: Libya, Tunisia and Morocco.
Somalia, South Sudan, Burundi and Seychelles are on the list for this part of the world.
Two countries (Central African Republic and Democratic Republic of the Congo) from this region are on the list.
South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho and Eswatini are considered level 4.
Five different South American destinations are listed: Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Suriname and French Guiana. Brazil recorded the third most reported Covid-19 death in the world in the past 28 days with 17,984, next to Russia, which is second with 21,772. Make a crazy guess as to which country is number a.
Two countries from this region are on the list: Costa Rica and Panama.
If you’re planning a Caribbean getaway, make sure it’s not Aruba, Bahamas, Cuba, Haiti, Jamaica, US Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, British Virgin Islands, Dominica, Curaçao, Martinique, Guadeloupe, Saint-Barthélemy, Saint-Lucie, Saint-Martin or Sint Maarten. The CDC moved Jamaica to Level 4 on September 7.
Now, you might notice that while the 77 destinations listed don’t include any locations in the United States, on the CDC map the United States is full of chestnuts. This is because since the start of 2020 the United States has truly dominated the world in most of the things related to Covid-19 that you don’t want to rule the world over, like the total number of Covid-19 cases. reported (40,885,507) and deaths (659,173) throughout the pandemic. In the past 28 days, the United States has recorded more Covid-19 cases (4,266,276) and Covid-19-related deaths (37,793) than any other country in the world. So if you’re in another country and planning to travel to Ochopee, Florida to see the world’s smallest post office, you might want to mail it instead.
