Gerace named to CAA preseason all-conference team


Orono, Maine – University of Maine graduate student offensive lineman Michel Gerace was named to the Colonial Athletic Association’s 2022 All-Conference Preseason Squad, as announced at the league’s annual media day on Thursday, July 28.

Plus, run back Freddie Broc and tight end Shawn Bowman were each named as honorable mention selections.

According to a vote by the league’s head coach and media relations directors, the Black Bears were expected to finish eighth with 134 votes in the preseason poll.

Villanova was selected as favorite to win the league after receiving 16 first results and 270 votes overall. The Wildcats were trailed by Delaware who received seven nods and 235 total votes. Rhode Island was third (224) followed by Richmond (219). William & Mary got a pair of first-place votes and 206 points in fifth while Elon received a first-place tally and 191 total votes in sixth. Stony Brook (151), Maine (134), New Hampshire (117), Monmouth (105), Towson (81), UAlbany (64) and Hampton (31) rounded out the field.

Maine, under freshman head coach Jordan Stevenreturn 35 winners and 17 starters from last year’s team that finished strong after winning five of its last six games, including a 33-20 victory over rival New Hampshire to cap the season.

Gerace, a 2021 CAA All-Conference second-team winner, has made 34 consecutive starts along the Black Bears offensive line. A two-time captain, Gerace enters the 2022 season as Maine’s most experienced veteran.

Freddie Broc, a two-time CAA Rookie of the Week award winner in 2021, led the Black Bears with 10 touchdowns a season ago. Brock rushed for a team-best 720 yards and seven touchdowns in 2021, averaging 65.5 yards per game, while adding three receiving touchdowns. Bowman, a 2021 CAA All-Conference Third Team selection, finished tied for second on the team with four touchdowns. Bowman set career highs for receptions (24) and receiving yards (284) last season.

The Black Bears open the 2022 season Sept. 3 when they travel to face Football Bowl Subdivision opponent New Mexico at 8 p.m. EST. The Black Bears open the home portion of their schedule on September 10 when they host Colgate at Alfond Stadium.
