Tigers announce 2021-22 non-conference schedule

MEMPHIS, Tennessee – The Head Coach Katrina Merriweather and staff have released their non-conference schedule for their first season at the helm of the Tigers. Memphis will play 12 non-conference games, including five at Elma Roane Fieldhouse, during the months of November and December.

“We believe we have a schedule in place that will challenge us in terms of competition and travel,” said Merriweather. “We’re excited to see how all of our hard work in the pre-season translates into games. Our goal is just to get better every time we step onto the pitch.”

The Tigers will kick off on November 9 at the newly renovated Elma Roane Fieldhouse against a Xavier side who will bring back two of their top three scorers from a season ago. Memphis will then host Southern Illinois-Edwardsville on November 14.

Two of the contests outside of Memphis will be part of the LMU Thanksgiving Classic in Los Angeles, California, scheduled for November 26-27. The Tigers open the weekend with host school Loyola Marymount on Friday and then play against the University of Pennsylvania on Saturday.

The American Athletic Conference schedule will feature 16 games with home games against Cincinnati, East Carolina, SMU, Tulane, Tulsa and Wichita State. The Tigers will also host Houston and Temple on their trip to UCF and South Florida.

Memphis sacks four of his top five scorers from last season, including senior fifth year Alana davis, who shot just over 54 percent from the field a season ago, and local Memphian Madison Griggs, who drained 35 three-pointers last season and ranked among the top long-range shooters in the AAC.

The Tigers also welcome the winning duo Tyler frierson and Emani jefferson, who come to Memphis after successful stints at Wright State with coach Merriweather and his team. The two were part of the 2020-21 squad which went 19-8 and won a share of the Horizon League regular season championship and won the Horizon League tournament which secured them a trip to the National Tournament of the NCAA. Frierson was also part of the 2018-19 Raider squad which won the Horizon League tournament and set a new program record of 27 wins in a single season.
