Volleyball hosts UConn Friday as part of MU Homecoming

MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University women’s volleyball team hosts their home opener of the BIG EAST Conference as part of MU Reunion Week on Friday, October 1 against the University of Connecticut at 5 p.m. Central Time .

The Golden Eagles welcome UConn to the Al McGuire Center for the first time since 2012 in a game that precedes the annual Marquette Madness basketball event. The game will be broadcast live on FloSports with Dan Avington on call.

Tickets for a Friday night game are available for purchase for $ 5 through the Marquette box office and online through Ticketmaster. The arena should fill up with madness after the game.

After the game against the Huskies in Milwaukee, Marquette will hike I-94 to Chicago on Sunday to take on BIG EAST travel partner DePaul at 3:00 p.m. CT. The game is being broadcast live on the BIG EAST digital network via FloSports with Peter Ferreri calling the action from McGrath-Phillips Arena.

MARQUETTE (11-2, 2-0 GRAND EST): The Golden Eagles opened BIG EAST last weekend with a 3-1 win at Villanova on Friday, followed by a Georgetown sweep on Saturday afternoon. Graduate student Taylor wolf was named BIG EAST offensive player of the week on Monday after reaching 0.400 (27-3-60) with four aces and having a total of 39 assists in both games. outside hitters Hope Werch and Jenna reitsma also had productive games over the weekend. Werch led MU at Villanova with 13 kills and four aces on serve, while Reitsma replaced Werch against the Hoyas and recorded her first career double-double with 12 kills and 11 digs, plus three aces.

Marquette is in his 17th year of BIG EAST competition and is 14-2 in the league’s home opener. MU have won five straight home opener since losing to Xavier in 2015.

UCONN (10-4, 2-0 GRAND EST): The Huskies enter Friday night’s game with a five-game winning streak after opening the BIG EAST game with home sweeps against Seton Hall and St. John’s. Caylee Parker, who was voted preseason All-BIG EAST leads UConn offensively with 148 kills (3.02 kills per set), while the team has a 0.255 winning percentage and kept their opponents at a mark of 0.153. Taylor Pannell took home a BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for her performance last weekend, averaging 2.0 blocks per set in two games. She tallied 10 blocks overall in the win over St. John’s, the most by a BIG EAST player in a three-set game this season. Kennadie Jake-Turner leads the league with a 0.354 hitting percentage (117-33-237).

Connecticut made a comeback in the BIG EAST last year and went 4-7 in the shortened 2020-21 season before losing to Creighton in the BIG EAST tournament. The Huskies are tied with DePaul for sixth in the BIG EAST preseason poll and face their first full BIG EAST schedule since 2012.

SERIES WITH UCONN: The Golden Eagles last met UConn on November 2, 2012 and won 3-1. Marquette has a three-game winning streak but is 3-3 overall against the Huskies.

DEPAUL (9-5, 2-0 GRAND-EST): Marquette’s opponent on Sunday opened the BIG EAST game with sweeps from Georgetown and Villanova. The Blue Demons lead a five-game winning streak this weekend and are led offensively by Jill Pressly, who secured a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for her second time this season. Pressly averaged 4.00 kills per set in the Georgetown and Villanova sweeps. Pressly’s 3.51 kills per set rank fifth in the BIG EAST conference this season, while Donna Brown is 12th in kills percentages with a 0.305 leading the team.

SERIES WITH DEPAUL: The Golden Eagles and Blue Demons have met 26 times and MU has won the last 20 contests. Overall the series is 22-4 in favor of Marquette. MU swept DePaul in each of the two games last spring, and DPU’s last victory came on November 1, 2008 in five sets.
