Overnight stays in commercial accommodation in Hungary rose 630% year-on-year to 1,164,000 in December, albeit from a low base affected by travel restrictions during the third wave of the coronavirus pandemic , data released by the Central Statistical Office (KSH) on Monday’s Show.

The number of nights spent by domestic travelers increased by 446% to 616,000. The number spent by foreign visitors jumped by 1,074% to 548,000.

KSH noted that the number of overnight stays was down 42% compared to the same month in 2019, before the pandemic.

Revenue from commercial accommodation reached 28 billion forints (79.3 million euros) in December, up 795% compared to the same month of the previous year.

For the year as a whole, the number of overnight stays increased by 11% per year to reach 15,223,000. The number spent by domestic travelers increased by 6% to 10,501,000 and the number spent by foreigners increased increased by 25% to 4,731,000.

Lake Balaton was the most popular travel destination in Hungary last year, attracting visitors who spent 3,602,000 nights.

Budapest was second, recording 3,176,000 overnight stays, followed by the Western Transdanubia region, where overnight stays reached 1,793,000.

Germans spent the most nights in Hungary: nearly 737,000. Czech nationals come second (443,000), followed by Romanians (331,000).

Commercial accommodation revenue rose 24% to 290 billion forints for the year.

Revenue from hotels totaled 244 billion forints, or 84% of the total. Bed and breakfast income reached 27 billion forints, or 9%.
